two posters
Posted: November 5th, 2011 | Author: Darren | Filed under: events/happenings, graphic design | Comments OffI haven’t had spare time to post my most recent work and am unable to update my website at the moment, but below are two posters I recently designed. The first one is a promotional poster for my d.Studio class. This is a small project we did in beween the two large ones. The class is an advanced class as we are designing for SAIC as our client. Therefore it requires a portfolio submission for acceptance, so all of our designs are around the department promoting the spring 2012 class.
The second one is for an event SAIC AIGA is hosting next week. I’m particularly excited for this one because I am coordinating the event. Although I’m not the Program Director, we try to switch it up a bit to distribute workload. Erin Huizenga spoke at the Designer’s Accord Town Hall Meeting that we hosted last year, so its nice to work with her again. She has extensive experience at top design firms in Chicago and founded EPIC a few years ago. Also, she is from Colorado which is awesome.
i am a graphic designer
Posted: October 17th, 2011 | Author: Darren | Filed under: events/happenings | Comments OffI can now officially call myself a graphic designer. I interviewed for the Designer and Office Assistant position for Instructional Fabrication and made the cut. This department staffs artists and designers working to support students and faculty in all manners of fabricating art objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. They provide instruction and technical assistance to students and faculty using SAIC’s: Ceramics Production Studios, Columbus Wood Shop, Columbus Metal Shop, Fashion Design Production Studios, Fiber & Materials Studies Production Studios, Sharp Instructional Shops and Sullivan Fabrication Studio.
Instructional Fabrication is a division of the department of Instructional Resources & Facilities Management (IRFM.)
I have worked for IRFM for the past two years as Resource Technician, so many of the faces are already familiar. I am pumped to be finally getting paid to work doing what I want to do.
viscom resource room
Posted: October 7th, 2011 | Author: Darren | Filed under: curatorial, writing | Comments OffA fellow Viscomer, Ling Chun and I curated the vinyl sticker collection on the windows of Viscom’s Resource Room. Every semester the collection changes to continually promote the materials available for view. The room houses a remarkable collection of previous issued design magazines, annual reports, paper samples, etc. Our exhibition ‘TYPE | IMAGE’ has been on display since the summer. Each logotype displayed is a combination of an image and a letter, which is common in logo design. Together we decided which to show and the color of the vinyl. Ling did the bookmark design and layout design for the page explaining our exhibition and I did the writing.

Posted: August 16th, 2011 | Author: Darren | Filed under: graphic design | Comments OffEvery term Viscom holds a portfolio review for new students interested in taking intermediate/advanced classes in the department. SAIC AIGA hosts a workshop to help them get accepted. We are having the first one on Thursday for the end of Summer session review. This is the quick poster I designed for the event.
